INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS WHO ARE UNDER 18.
If you are the parent of an under18 and you would like your child to study at English Language House you will need to give your consent so that your child can study with us. You do this by completing a parental consent form.
HOW TO REGISTER A STUDENT WHO IS UNDER 18s
Parents, with their child/children, should:
- See our course programmes and choose what you prefer.
- Read the information for parents (on this page) and make sure you agree.
- See our terms and conditions and make sure you agree.
- If you have questions you want to ask contact us and book an appointment to speak to us.
- With your child complete the Registration Form and
- Ask your child to complete the level test on his/her own without help.
- The parent should complete the parental consent form.
- Pay the registration fee
- Pay the full fees
HOW WE LOOK AFTER A STUDENT WHO IS UNDER 18
Under 18 year olds are children under English Law. See our safeguarding policy and our welfare policy for under 18s which relate to the care of all students but especially under 18 year olds (who are considered children under English law) studying at English Language House. Please make sure you read this with your child/children before you book their English programme.
Information for all students and all under 18 students and their parents:
Signing in and out of school each day:
Under 18s attendance will be monitored very closely by the office and absences followed up immediately.
It may be required for under 18s to sign in on arrival and out on departure at the ELH Office.
At school:
Under 18s who study at English Language House will be supervised during the times they are under the care of ELH. The teachers and ELH staff will supervise them during their classes, break times and during activities and trips they have booked. ELH staff who supervise under 18s are DBS checked.
If parents have booked homestay accommodation for their under 18s, ELH will make all necessary checks to make sure that the homestay providers are suitable to house and look after under 18s.
Supervision if parent book only lessons:

Under 18s who have not booked to participate during lunch, breaks, trips and activities outside class times will only be supervised during their class times and ELH will not be responsible for them before the start or after the end of their lessons each day. Parents will need to sign a parental consent form to indicate that they will take responsibility for the under 18 outside class times. ELH will need to know what arrangements the parents have made to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the under 18s before the start and after the end of lessons each day they attend classes at ELH.
Information for Groups of Under 18s, Parents and Group leaders
If under 18s are part of group and arrive with a group leader the group leader will need to have a police check sent to ELH from their country before we can agree to accept them as group leader for their group. Group leaders will only ever be responsible for their groups and cannot oversee, supervise or be left alone with other groups or students.

Under 18s who are 16 or 17 may be able to join adult classes – special conditions apply:

- receive a signed parental consent form for the student
- verify that this is appropriate for both the student and the class. It may be suitable to suggest that the student trial the class before ELH can make a final decision. In this instance ELH reserves the right to ask the student to stop the class if ELH considers that it is unsuitable to either party
- receive a completed (i) application form (ii)needs analysis form and (iii)visa form if required
- receive payment as required in the adult course brochures.

If you are the parent of an under 18 year old and you ask us to find homestay accommodation for your son/daughter we will check that you and your son/daughter agree to the “ELH Homestay rules for under 18s”. If you do, we will be able to place you with an English speaking family while you are studying at ELH.
We will check the homestay provider to make sure that there are no unsuitable people living in the family and that there is no reason why an under 18 cannot live there. We will also check the room the student will use and the facilities and utilities (i.e. heating, gas, fire exits, etc.) in the house to make sure everything is clean, tidy and safe. You will have your own room in the house and no other student will be living in the family if they are i) the same nationality as you, or ii) over 18.

- Unless students are arriving to live in Milton Keynes with their family, we strongly recommend that students aged 16 and 17 stay in Elh homestay accommodation.
- By choosing not to book Elh homestay accommodation you are giving permission for the student to live independently in the UK.
- If a student is not staying in Elh homestay accommodation we must receive full contact details of where the student is staying. We accept no responsibility for accommodation not booked through us.
- We strongly recommend that students aged 16 or 17 book the Elh taxi transfer service.
- By choosing not to book the Elh taxi transfer service, you are giving permission for the student to travel to the UK independently. We cannot be held responsible for the safety of under 18s who have not booked the Elh taxi transfer service.
- Some airlines do not allow students under the age of 18 to travel without an adult. Please check the airline’s guidelines before booking flights.
- Students aged 16 and 17 are able to join all social activities arranged and supervised by Elh staff.
- Students aged 16 and 17 can travel independently within the UK on day trips, providing they return to their accommodation by 23:00 hours.

Care of Under 18s:
At English language house, all students will be treated as adults, including those that are under 18 years old. Students under 18 may mix with older students - in the classroom during social activities and excursions. All students will receive tuition in the classroom and support from Elh staff throughout their stay. As students under 18 years of age are not yet considered adults by UK law, Elh strives to provide an even greater level of care to these students.

- To register a student who is under 18 years old student, please submit a fully registration form and parental consent form. The more detail you can provide on these forms, the better we can prepare for the student’s arrival and ensure their well-being.
- By submitting the registration form, the student’s parent agrees to Elh Terms and Conditions and to the rules for students under 18 years old.
- We cannot confirm the student’s place until the completed forms have been received.
Absence from class and unauthorised absence:

- If a student under 18 years old plans to be absent from class or
- Leaves the school during lesson time
- Students who are 16 or 17 years old can travel independently within the UK during the day, providing they return to their accommodation by 11.00 pm and notify the Elh accommodation offer and their homestay family in advance.
- If a student under 18 years old wants to be absent overnight, take a holiday and/or travel outside of the UK, their parent must give written permission in advance.
Homestay accommodation for students under 18 years old
- Elh can provide homestay accommodation for 16 and 17 year old from January 2021.
- Elh will carefully select suitable homestay accommodation for students who are under 18 years old.
- All homestay families have undergone thorough checks and have been personally inspected by a member of the Elh staff . We will always place students under 18 years old with families where any other students hosted by the family will also be under 18. Students under the age of 18 are NOT permitted to stay in, or visit, homestay accommodation for adults ie students who are 18 years old or over.
- Students aged 16 and 17 may be accommodated in host families for a maximum period of 11 months.
- If a student under 18 years old is NOT staying in Elh homestay accommodation, the parents must provide Elh with the contact details of where the student is staying
Transfer service for under 18s:
- Elh can arrange arrival and departure taxi transfers on request to ensure safe and comfortable travel between the student’s arrival point in the UK and the school or their accommodation in Milton Keynes, as requested.
- Elh strongly recommends that the Under 18 Elh taxi transfer service is booked for the student. Arrival: The taxi driver will be DBS checked and the contact details will be sent to parents before the student's arrival in the UK. The taxi driver will meet the student at the arrivals gate of the airport, or at the arrivals hall of the Eurostar station. The taxi will take the student to their homestay accommodation or to Elh as arranged. Departure: the taxi driver will collect the student from their homestay accommodation or from Elh, as arranged, and will take them to the airport or Eurostar station. The student will need to check-in and go to the entrance of the departure gate.
- If a student who is under 18 does not wish to use the Elh transfer service, Elh can not be held responsible for their safety.
Evening return time:
- Students who are 16 or 17 must return to their Elh homestay accommodation by 11.00 pm every evening. This is in the interest of their safety and will also ensure they are fit to study the next morning.
Social activities, events and trips:
- Students may be offered a selection of social activities, events and full or half day trips which they can join as part of their English programme. These may be free or paid events, activities or trips and students must confirm their participation in advance.
- Students should bring enough money to cover any expenses eg entry fees to places of interest, train ticket, snacks etc, All social activities, events and trips will be supervised by Elh staff and under 18s must remain with the Elh staff member and under the Elh staff member's supervision at all times.
- English Language House will not be held responsible for the actions or safety of students who do not remain under the supervision of Elh staff at all times.
Flights to the UK:
- Some airlines do not allow under 18s to travel without an adult. As airline policies regarding young travellers change frequently you must check the current guidelines before booking any flights.
- Please book flights in good time to ensure that under 18 year olds will not travel at unacceptable times
