IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT HOMESTAY

What is homestay accommodation?

Homestay is accommodation with an English speaking family. Students will have a room in the family and will live as part of the family for the duration of their stay. Homestay is not a "hotel" or "bed and breakfast" accommodation and students who stay in homestay must respect the rules of the family and treat the homestay family as they would their own.

Advantages of staying in homestay:

Students who live in homestay will be part of an English speaking family. They will have meals with the family, watch TV and participate in the day to day routines of family life in UK. They will get the opportunity to practice their English every day and so will see an improvement quickly.

Is homestay suitable for you?
  • Do you mind living with a family?
  • Do you mind following this family's rules?
  • Do you mind sharing a bathroom?
  • If you are a smoker, will you mind if the family asks that you smoke outside the house?
  • If you are under 18, will you mind being home before 10pm every evening?
If you don't mind, then maybe homestay is right for you!

Some students prefer to be completely independent:
  • Do you prefer to cook and eat what you want, when they want?
  • Do you prefer to have a shower/bath whenever you want rather that at a time that is convenient for the family?  (some families may have very young children who go to bed early it may not be possible for students to have a shower very late at night because this may wake the children up!)
  • Do you prefer to stay out until very late and sometimes come home in the early hours of the morning?
  • Do you prefer to watch TV or play video games late at night?
  • Do you prefer to smoke in the house?
  • Do you prefer not to share a bathroom with others?
  • Do you prefer to have lots of friends come to your house and stay up until late at night?
If you prefer this, then homestay accommodation may not be suitable for you!

Who is eligible for homestay accommodation?
  • ELH  adult students who are 18 years old or over  (it may be possible to provide homestay accommodation for under 18s but only if their parents request this and only if suitable accommodation is available.)
  • ELH students who are studying a full time programme of 10 lesson or more per week
  • ELH students who intend to use the accommodation only while they are studying. ELH cannot guarantee that it can provide homestay accommodation during the holidays, or while the student is taking a break from their studies.
  • ELH students who can pay for their accommodation in advance (Students who intend to stay in homestay for 10 weeks or less must make full payment of fees in advance. Students who intend to stay for longer than 10 weeks must make payment of the first 10 weeks in advance and pay the balance on arrival at ELH.  Please note that: ELH is unable to book accommodation for students who make no advance payment)

How soon do I apply for homestay accommodation?

ELH recommends that students apply for homestay accommodation 5 weeks or more in advance of their arrival in UK.  Students should apply for the maximum period of time they wish to live in homestay. ELH cannot guarantee that students will be able to extend their accommodation beyond their initial request dates and students who request less time in homestay than they intend to take up, risk having no accommodation available after the end of their request dates.

Please note that:

Students can only book ELH homestay accommodation through ELH and are not allowed to make their own private arrangements with ELH homestay families.

Students who agree to ELH homestay accommodation agree to abide by the ELH terms and conditions governing homestay.  This includes appropriate behaviour in homestay accommodation. ELH reserves the right to remove a student from homestay accommodation if the student behaves inappropriately or does not abide by the terms and conditions agreed. No refund will be available in this instance.
