THE FULLY ONLINE CELTA

THE NEXT ONLINE CELTA COURSE WILL BE OFFERED
IN JANUARY 2021

This is a fully online course and all aspects of the course will be conducted using a VLP (Virtual Learning Platform)
ABOUT THE FULLY ONLINE CELTA COURSE
This fully online CELTA will follow the guidelines given by Cambridge for the blended online CELTA course and will include Teaching Practice (TP), feedback and Supervised Lesson Preparation (SLP) conducted live online.
The course is suitable for candidates who have a very good level of English, good basic IT skills and have use of a good computer and broadband services for the duration of the course.
Trainees will be required to communicate virtually with others involved in the course; knowledge of how to use some of the following would be an advantage:
  • Gmail
  • Google Drive
  • Skype
  • Zoom
  • WhatsApp
  • WeChat
  • Facebook Messenger
  • FaceTime
  • Microsoft teams
  • Slack
  • Edmondo
  • Dropbox
The criteria for entry to the CELTA course can be seen in the CELTA information pack. If you are interested in applying for the course you should first read the CELTA Terms and Conditions and the Terms and Conditions for Online Courses.
If you agree with these Terms and Conditions you can complete and submit the CELTA application form and the pre interview task and also pay the application fee. If your application is successful you will be emailed and offered an interview for your chosen course. If your application is unsuccessful we will let you know by email and we will refund your application fee. Following your interview you will be given a conditional or an unconditional offer to attend the CELTA course at ELH. A conditional offer will require you to meet certain criteria in order to join the course.
You will receive your offer by email. You must pay your course fees no later than 28 days after you receive an unconditional offer in order to confirm your place on the course. However, if the course start date is less than 28 days away you must pay full fees within 48 hours of interview. If you pay in half this time you can claim a £100 discount.
If you apply for a course that is due to start less than 20 days from the date of your application, we will require full course fees to be paid on application. You can claim the £100 discount if you make this payment on the same day that you submit your application.
After payment of the full course fees, you will be sent all the information and materials required for the course. This material may contain some or all of the following:
  • CELTA pre-course task
  • Reading list
  • Timetable
  • Observation tasks
  • IT skills tasks
  • VLP familiarisation task
Each CELTA course is 120 hours long and trainees should expect to spend between 10 hours to 15 hours per week working on CELTA during their 10 week or 15 week online course. It is very possible that in some weeks, trainees may find that they exceed these hours quite significantly.

HOW MUCH WORK IS INVOLVED?
Each course requires a minimum of 120 hours attendance. Trainees must anticipate that they will spend:
  • no less than 2 hours to complete each CELTA Course Unit in their own time
  • no less than 6 hours per week to attend TP and Live Online sessions with tutors
  • no less than 4 hours to prepare and write up each assignment
The timetable for TP and the Live Online sessions will be set by the tutors. Tutors will take into account trainees preferences, as far as possible, when organising and rescheduling these sessions.

TIMETABLE
The timetable for each course will be shared with you virtually. Some flexibility may be possible and tutors may make changes to accommodate students,  trainees and tutors availability and requirements as well as the requirements of the course as the course progresses. See an example of an online timetable here.
During the course you will need to log into the online platform and complete the units shown below in your own time. Your tutors will monitor your progress and give support as required.

TEACHING PRACTICE - FEEDBACK - SUPERVISED LESSON PREPARATION - OBSERVATIONS OF EXPERENCED TEACHERS
Teaching Practice (TP)
Each trainee must teach and be assessed by tutors for a total of 360 mins of live online lessons taught during the course. These will be organised in TP slots of 40, 45 and/or 60 mins each time. Trainees will have to enter their virtual class room via Zoom to teach groups of foreign students. They will be assessed by their tutors and given feedback to help them develop. Trainees will receive training on how to teach virtually and will get a chance to practice before the start their assessed teaching practice.
TP may occur:
  • either during the Morning ie from 9:00-11:00 GMT
  • or during the Afternoon ie from 14:00-15:00 GMT
  • on during the Evening ie from 18:00-20:00 GMT
We will try to accommodate trainee's preferences where possible: however the times will also be dependant to student enrolment and trainees should be prepared to teach during any of these times.
Feedback will take place after TP.
During feedback trainees will need to reflect and evaluate the lessons they taught, give feedback on lessons taught by others and offer constructive criticism to other trainees who have taught lessons on that day.
We will try to offer 3 different time slots for TP:
  • Morning 9:00-11:00 GMT
  • Afternoon 14:00-15:00 GMT
  • Evening 18:00-20:00 GMT
Supervised Lesson Preparation (SLP)
During SLP tutors will help trainees prepare for their teaching practice.
Observations:
Additionally trainees must observe 6 hours of lessons taught by qualified teachers, and must observe and give feedback on lessons taught by other trainees in their TP group.
