CLASS DESCRIPTION

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN AND HOW YOU WILL LEARN IN YOUR CLASSES:

We want all our students to enjoy their learning experience at English language house and to feel more confident about their English at the end of their course. Our students' achievements are our achievements and our priority will always be to teach lessons that will target our students' individual language needs and help them reach their English language goals during the time they spend learning English with us.

When students book one of our English programmes they may join a number of different classes which will help them improve them English and/or prepare them for an exam. Each student will get a personal course outline which will show them what classes they will study during their course. The course outline will also contain the student's progress reports which their teachers will complete every 5 weeks to give the student information about his/her progress and advice on what to do to continue to improve.

Students may join one or more of the following:

GENERAL ENGLISH
General English lessons will help students improve their all round ability in English.
The lessons will provide a balance of practice in reading, writing, listening and speaking and will also cover grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Students will use a course book during their lessons and teachers may use additional material, whenever necessary, to help students improve their English in one of more areas that students may be struggling with.

GRAMMAR AND WRITING
Grammar and Writing lessons will help students improve their grammar and their writing skills. These lessons can be very useful when students are preparing for exams.
Teachers will help students improve the accuracy of the grammar they already know and help them use this accurately in different writing contexts. With stronger students, teachers may introduce new more complex areas of grammar and set writing tasks for students to complete either during their lessons or outside the classroom.
Students
may use a variety of different course books during their lessons and teachers will also use material from other sources to help students improve their grammar and writing skills.

MULTI SKILLS
Multi Skills lessons will help students who need to focus on improving their skills in reading, writing, listening and speaking. These lessons are particularly useful when students are preparing for exams.
Students will mostly use a course book during their lessons and teachers may also use material from other sources eg newspapers, magazines, multimedia broadcasts etc. to help students get more practice on topics they are unfamiliar with.

Although the main focus of the lessons will be on skills students will also do some work on grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

CONVERSATION AND PRONUNCIATION
Conversation and Pronunciation lessons will help students improve their ability to speak fluently and accurately  in a variety of situations.
Lessons will concentrate mostly on speaking, listening and pronunciation but students will also do some grammar, reading and writing work to help them improve the English they are using when they speak to others.
Teachers will use a variety of different books, resources and material during the lessons.

EXAM PREPARATION
Exam Preparation lessons are suitable for students who want to prepare for one of the English Exams for international students. Lessons will include work on reading, writing, listening, and speaking as well as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Lessons will focus on areas of language that you will be tested on during your exam. Your teacher will help you improve your English and also give you exam practice material so you can improve your exam technique and be ready to sit your exam. The class will help you to achieve your best possible grade when you sit your exam.
Students will use a course book during their lessons but teachers will also use a variety of different exam books, resources and material to give students further practice.

Students who book a One2One, Two2One, Three2One, Closed group or Bespoke programme may also request one or more of the following lessons as part of their programme:

ACADEMIC ENGLISH
Academic English provides language instruction for academic study in English Universities and colleges of Higher Education.
Lessons will
address all four language skills, ie reading, writing, listening and speaking, for academic purposes and will include work on listening comprehension, fluency development, oral intelligibility, grammar, and vocabulary development.

SURVIVAL ENGLISH
Survival English is suitable for students who need to learn how to use English in their everyday life in the UK. The lessons are very practical and students will learn how to book appointments, telephone a company for advice or information, open a bank account, join the library etc.
Teachers may use a variety of different course books and material from real situations to teach the lessons. Sometimes teachers may take students out of the classroom to practice their English.

TASK BASED GUIDED LEARNING
Task based lessons are suitable groups of adult students who study together.
Teachers will help students to choose a task that they are interested in, to find out more about this and to create an information leaflet, a poster or a podcast about this. Possible topic areas may be eg:
  1. How to apply to a British University
  2. How to find a job
  3. How to book an appointment with a doctor and then talk about how you feel and what is wrong
  4. How to register to vote in the UK
  5. How to advertise and sell your old books, clothes on Ebay, Facebook marketplace etc
  6. How to organise a trip in the UK for you and your family etc, etc
Lessons will provide students with opportunities to develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and also improve the accuracy and fluency of their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.

Teachers will guide students to find out more about this task and will help them look at the language we use in England to talk and write about this.

PLAY YOUR PLAY
In these lessons teachers will introduce students to English plays and Playwrights.
Teachers may also organise to take students to the theatre so watch a play.
During the lessons students may read sections of a play, and look at specific parts of the plays they may want to record.
Students will work
in groups to prepare their script, act and record scenes from the play on video or audio. Students will need to take on the roles of casting director, producer, camera man, actor etc and will need to rehearse and perform the scenes from the play for the camera or audio recording.
Students can keep the video or audio to share with their family and friends.
Play your play will help students become more independent learners and improve their overall ability to understand authentic English used in plays.

BUSINESS ENGLISH
Business English will focus on the type of English used in business contexts, such as international trade, commerce, finance, insurance, banking, and many office settings.
Teachers will cover the language necessary to make your communication fluent and accurate so that your message clear in both your written and spoken English. They will also focus on improving your vocabulary and grammar as well as all four skills within a business context.

PROJECT ENGLISH
Project English lessons are suitable for groups of under18s who study together.
Students will choose a project they would like to do and the teacher will help the students to research and create their project.
The project may be:
  • Students create a poster for a place of interest you can visit in Milton Keynes
  • Students write a blog about life in England
  • Students create a comic book
  • Students film a video
  • Students create a podcast
Students will usually work together to complete their project.
Lessons will provide students with opportunities to develop their reading, writing, listening and speaking skills and also improve the accuracy and fluency of their grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation.
Teachers will help students with the English they will need to research ad create their project.

DISCOVER ENGLAND
Discover England are guided learning lessons.
Teachers will help and guide students to find out more about England and English customs and culture and to present their findings to the class.
Students will learn about the UK, the country, the people, the history and the language. They may need to go to the library, use the internet and sometimes visit places of interest and interview people as part of their research.
Students will work in small groups to collect information and bring it back to class. They may need to source material from newspapers, magazines, the internet etc, take photographs, conduct interviews and bring the material they have collected back to the class o share with other students.

Discover England will help students become more independent learners and improve their overall ability to use English in real situations outside the classroom.
