THE DELTA COURSE 2023
The Cambridge Delta is a highly regarded post graduate teacher training qualification.
It is suitable for experienced teachers of English to speakers of other languages
who are ready to progress to a higher level of professional development.

Delta is one of the best-known and most popular advanced TEFL/TESOL qualifications in the world. The Delta course offers experienced English language teachers a flexible way to study in order to achieve a post graduate qualification that will significantly enhance their career prospects.
ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES:
Eligible Delta candidates should have:
- an initial teacher training qualification such as the CELTA or Trinity TESOL or equivalent
- a minimum of 2 years experience teaching post CELTA
- experience of teaching a variety of different EFL learners and classes
HOW TO GAIN ENTRY TO THE COURSE:
If you wish to gain entry to the Delta course you should complete the Enquiry about Delta form and submit this so that is arrives before the end of June 2023. Our trainers will then contact you with information about how to apply.
THE DELTA COURSE
The Delta course will follow a programme of input sessions, teaching practice, written assignments and lesson observations. Trainees must have regular teaching throughout the course and will need to be observed teaching at two different levels.
Trainers will try to run sessions on days and times that are most suitable for trainees to attend.
Delta comprises of 3 modules which trainees can take separately. Even if a trainee has already completed a module elsewhere, they can study their remaining modules with English Language House. A pass in all modules would be required in order to prove Qualified ELT teacher status.
You can choose to complete all 3 Delta modules or select the module you wish to join. There will be live online sessions with trainers during the delivery of all 3 modules.

The three modules comprise:
MODULE 1
Focus and aims: The module focuses on the background to teaching and learning of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in a range of contexts.
Delivery: Trainers will support trainees for a maximum of 8 hours to help them prepare for Module 1. There will be:

- 6 x 1 hour zoom sessions, each focusing on one of the lower exam tasks +
- a mock exam which will be graded by trainers. Trainers will give trainees individual feedback on their exam results.
MODULE 2
Focus and aims: The module focuses on developing the trainees’ awareness and expertise in relation to the principles and professional practice of teaching ESOL in a range of contexts.
Delivery: There will be 66 hours of scheduled input led by trainers. These will include:

- Trainer led live online input sessions conducted via Zoom each week which will consist of seminars, lectures, workshops, etc. These sessions will run on either Saturday or Sunday for 6 hours each week.
- Trainer set pre-input session reading/tasks, and tutor guidance on peer-observation.
- 1:1 tutorials for each LSA (for the Background Essay and the Lesson Plan) and for the Experimental Practice assignment.
- Trainers will direct trainees to choose either Lexis or Grammar for LSA1. LSA2 will be Skills and trainees will have a free choice of either Systems or Skills for LSA4.
- Trainers to give 1:1 feedback to trainees on their Diagnostic lesson, LSA1, LSA2 and LSA3.
- Trainers will organise for trainees to complete a minimum of 10 hours peer observation. Course participants will be required to observe each other during the course (for non-LSA lessons).
- Trainers will require trainees to meet the 100 required independent learning hours (researching and writing assignments, lesson planning, writing self-reflections, etc.) outside of contact hours with course trainers.
MODULE 3
Focus and Aims: There are two options for DELTA Module 3:

Focus and aims: Option 1, module 3 focuses on broadening the candidates’ knowledge of a chosen specialism and developing their understanding of syllabus design, testing and assessment.
Option 2 (module3) English Language Teaching Management (ELTM)
Focus and aims: Option 2, module 3 focuses on broadening candidates’ knowledge and developing their understanding of management in one of the following four specialisms: academic management, marketing, customer service or human resources management (HRM). Candidates are required to apply knowledge of managing change and project management to a proposal in their chosen specialism related to a specified language teaching operation (LTO).

PREVIOUS DELTA TRAINEES
Jimmy gained his Delta in 2012. Since completing his course he has worked in Malaysia and in the UK.
Stuart joined the Delta course at Elh in 2015. He completed his module 1 in 2016 and module 2 and 3 after this. Stuart is currently an ESOL lecturer at Northampton College.
Clare completed her course 2016. She is currently working as a senior teacher and Director of Studies in the UK.
Ian completed his Delta course at Elh. He worked as a senior teacher and became a CELTA trainer soon after. He continued to work as a teacher and CELTA trainer until his retirement in 2019.
