  • You may need to buy a course book when studying at ELH - you can order your book via the Elh Office who will also set this up for digital access when possible.
  • Teachers will share copies of learning material with you via OneDrive or may email them to your Elh email before, during and/or after each class.
  • Face2Face students can also join the ELH lending library and borrow graded readers to read while they are studying with us.

About the ELH Lending Library
At ELH we have a library of graded readers that students can borrow. These are reading books that can help you to improve your English while you are studying with us. While Covid restrictions are in place, these graded readers may be available to you to borrow in digital format.

How to join the ELH Lending Library:
To join the ELH lending library:
  • You pay a £20 joining fee and you can borrow 1 graded reader to read each time. When you finish you return this and can borrow another reader.
Once you return all the graded readers you have borrowed in good conditions we will refund your £20 joining fee.

Dictionaries and Grammar books

A good dictionary and/or a grammar book will help you in your studies. If you do not have one you can choose to buy one of these:

Oxford Essential Dictionary                                             ISBN:  9780194333993
Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary                          ISBN:  9780194799003
Collins Cobuild Advanced Learner’s Dictionary           ISBN: 9780007580583
English Grammar in Use (with answers)                       ISBN: 9780521189064
English Grammar in Use (with answers and CD)         ISBN: 9780521189392

Certificates and documents you can ask for:

Certificate of Attendance - Please ask the ELH Office for this at least one week before you leave the school.

Verification of Student Status - Please ask the ELH Office for this at least one week before you need it, if possible. Students usually ask for this document if they are travelling outside the UK or if they want to join the Milton Keynes Library.

Individual Study Programme and Student Progress Report (ISP&PR)
We will prepare your ISP&PR when you first join the school and we will share it with you via googledrive so you can open and see it any time.
Your teacher/s will complete your progress report every 5 weeks. This will give you information about your attendance and progress and advice on how you can improve your English further.
We will use your Elh email to email you a link so you can open and view your progress report. At the end of your course we can email you a pdf copy of your full progress report if you like; you will need to request this in advance.

Attendance

Attendance is recorded in the progress reports. This is particularly important for Visa Students. Visa students who do not attend over 80% of their lessons may have problems with the UKVI.

If you are absent for good reason, please write to explain. You could send an email. We  cannot refund your fees if you miss a lesson but are able to tell your teacher and keep the work he/she did in class so you do not miss the work and you can catch up later.

If you know you will be absent at the time when you book your course, please tell the Office, so that you are not charged for the classes you will miss.

THE ELH OFFICE
We are currently available for in person meetings at the Elh Office during Office opening hours. Students who are studying with us can come to see us during these times and visitors are  usually seen by appointment.

The Elh Office is usually during office opening hours when our admin staff are available to arrange meetings with students and clients. We will also check messages and emails during these times and respond to enquiries as soon as possible. Outside these times, we will always respond if there is an emergency, and we will sometimes agree to meet you via Zoom if you have made an appointment.

While Covid restrictions are in place the ELH Office will work mostly virtually. Students can contact us via Telephone, Email, and WhatsApp and we can also invite them to Zoom for a longer conversation if they prefer.

Our Telephone and WhatsApp contact details are:
  • ELH Landline Tel: +44 (0) 1908 108683 ext 800
  • Elh Office Mobile and WhatsApp: 07486868211
  • Office Mob2 is our 24hr Emergency mobile and WhatsApp: 07942671256

ELH Rules - Classroom Behaviour
  • Please arrive to your classes on time
  • Go to your classroom. If no-one is using the room, go in, and sit down.
  • Try to go to all your classes.

ARRIVING LATE
It is important to try to arrive on time for your class, but ….

If you arrive late: go quietly into the classroom, say, “Sorry I’m late!",  sit down and join in the lesson.

If you know you will be late for the next lesson:

Tell your teacher or the ELH office or WhatsApp Mihaela to let her know.

Teachers will wait for students for a maximum of 20 minutes after the start of the lesson.

If no students arrive during this time the class will be cancelled but not offered on another day.

LEAVING EARLY
If you must leave early: tell your teacher before the class starts.

MOBILE PHONES
Mobile phone

Please keep your mobile phones on silent during the class.

If there is an emergency or a good reason for not leaving your phone on silent, please tell your teacher. If you have to take an emergency call in class, please leave the room quietly, talk on the landing at the top of the stairs (not in the corridor outside the classroom), and try not to disturb other students.

CHANGING LEVELS
We will assess your English before you arrive when you send us your Registration form and level test and we will place you in a class that is a suitable level for you. Your week 1 is usually a diagnostic week when we will check that you are in the correct level and that your lessons are suitable for you.

After your diagnostic week we will give you your coursebook/s for your level and you will continue with this until your English has improved and you are ready to move to a higher level.

Your teacher will usually tell you when you are ready to change levels but you can also check your progress report to see if you are ready.

If you think you are in the wrong level and would like to move up or down, please talk to your teacher(s) or come and talk to Tatiana or Mihaela at the ELH office.

ELH TERMS AND CONDITIONS
You can see all our Terms and conditions on our website including:
  • Our Terms and Conditions for students.
  • Our Terms and conditions for online purchases.
  • Our Terms and Conditions for exam entry.

We ask you to read these and sign to say you agree to abide by these before you join the school. Please check these again if you need to make any changes to your programme, request to cancel lessons and/or request a refund.

PROBLEMS?
Do you have any problems?
We want you to be happy and to have a good experience studying at English Language House. If you are not happy we need to know, so please tell us and we can try to help.

Do you feel like this?
If you feel unhappy please tell us!
You can talk to Mihaela, Tatiana or Clare and they will try to help.

Do you have problems with your lessons or with homework?
First, talk to your teacher.

If you still need help, talk to the Elh Office via WhatsApp or Email or meet us via Zoom.

GENERAL PROBLEMS
Do you have any general problems?

These could be any problems about living in the UK. For example, you might be worried about your English, your job, your home, people you have met, or maybe you feel unsafe.

Mihaela and Clare are the Elh Welfare Officers. You can talk to them about anything.

You can ask to talk to them privately so no-one can hear what you say. They will listen and will try to help,  or tell you where you can get help.

One of them is always available during the ELH School Office opening hours. If you have a real emergency you could contact us via our 24hr Emergency mobile and WhatsApp: 07942671256

OTHER PROBLEMS
Do you have other problems?

You could also contact the Citizens Advice Bureau for advice and help. They can help with problems with housing, debt, employment, immigration/ passports, or something faulty which you have bought. They will give you free information and legal advice if you need this. The Citizens Advice Bureau in Milton Keynes is very near ELH. You can see their address on their website but if you are not sure where to go you can ask the ELH office for directions.

MEDICAL PROBLEMS
You can phone 111 if you need medical help or advice urgently, but it is not an emergency.

In an emergency, you can phone 999 or 112 for an ambulance.

BULLYING AND HARASSMENT
If people are treated badly by other people, it is unfair and frightening.
Everyone should be treated with respect at ELH – and in the UK.

If you have not been treated well, you feel unhappy or unsafe please speak to Mihaela, Clare or Tatiana at the ELH Office. They will try to help.

If you treat others badly, ELH will investigate and you may be asked to leave.
Bullying or harassment is wrong and serious.

COMPLAINTS:
We hope you will be happy at English Language House but if you have a problem which you told us about but which we didn't help you to solve you may want to make a formal complaint. You can do this here: Complaints procedure and complaints form.
