HOW WE LOOK AFTER A STUDENT WHO IS UNDER 18

Under 18 year olds are children under English Law. See our safeguarding policy and our welfare policy for under 18s which relate to the care of all students but especially under 18 year olds (who are considered children under English law) studying at English Language House. Please make sure you read this with your child/children before you book their English programme.

Information for all students and all under 18 students and their parents:

Signing in and out of school each day:

Under 18s attendance will be monitored very closely by the office and absences followed up immediately.
It may be required for under 18s to sign in on arrival and out on departure at the ELH Office.

At school:
Under 18s who study at English Language House will be supervised during the times they are under the care of ELH. The teachers and ELH staff will supervise them during their classes, break times and during activities they have booked.
ELH staff who work with under 18s will be DBS checked.

Supervision if parent book only lessons:

Information for Parents who book only lessons
Under 18s who have not booked to participate during lunch, breaks, and activities outside class times will only be supervised during their class times and ELH will not be responsible for them before the start or after the end of their lessons each day. Parents will need to sign a parental consent form to indicate that they will take responsibility for the under 18 outside class times. ELH will need to know what arrangements the parents have made to ensure the safety and wellbeing of the under 18s before the start and after the end of lessons each day they attend classes at ELH.

Information for Groups of Under 18s, Parents and Group leaders
If under 18s are part of group and arrive with a group leader the group leader will need to have a police check sent to ELH from their country before we can agree to accept them as group leader for their group. Group leaders will only ever be responsible for their groups and cannot oversee, supervise or be left alone with other groups or students.

Information for Parents who want their under 18s to study in an adult class
Under 18s who are 16 or 17 may be able to join adult classes – special conditions apply:
To accept an under 18 year old student (aged 16 or 17 ) into an adult class ELH must:
  • receive a signed parental consent form for the student
  • verify that this is appropriate for both the student and the class. It may be suitable to suggest that the student trial the class before ELH can make a final decision. In this instance ELH reserves the right to ask the student to stop the class if ELH considers that it is unsuitable to either party
  • receive a completed (i) application form (ii)needs analysis form and (iii)visa form if required
  • receive payment as required in the adult course brochures.
Under 16s cannot be taught with students who are 18 or over so we cannot accept them in adult classes.

Information for students under the age of 18 and their parents:
The minimum age for students to join adult classes is 16. Students who are under the age of 18 are considered children by UK law and we require additional information and parental consent to be able to accept these students onto our adult courses.
The the following rules apply to students aged 16 and 17:
  • Most under 18 students who arrive in Milton Keynes will live with members of their family.
  • If students do not live with their parents then their parent/s are giving permission for their child  to live independently in the UK.
  • English Language House must receive full contact details of where the student is staying while they are studying with us.
  • We strongly recommend that students aged 16 or 17 book an Elh taxi transfer service.
  • By choosing not to book an Elh taxi transfer service, you are giving permission for your child to travel to in the UK independently. We cannot be held responsible for the safety of under 18s who have not booked an Elh taxi transfer service.
  • Some airlines do not allow students under the age of 18 to travel without an adult. Please check the airline’s guidelines before booking flights.
  • Students aged 16 and 17 are able to join social activities when these are arranged and supervised by Elh staff.
  • Students aged 16 and 17 can travel independently within the UK on day trips, but we strongly recommend that they return to their accommodation by 23:00 hours.
Elh must receive written permission from parents or guardians for students aged 16 and 17 who
  • wish to be absent from lessons or
  • leave school during lesson time
  • travel independently and be absent overnight
  • arrange a holiday during their course
If a student under 18 needs urgent medical attention and their parents/guardians cannot be contacted, Elh will act in loco parentis and will arrange for a doctor to give any medical treatment considered necessary, as well as authorise the administration of an anaesthetic and operation.

Care of Under 18s:
At English language house, all students will be treated as adults, including those that are under 18 years old. Students under 18 may mix with older students - in the classroom during social activities and excursions. All students will receive tuition in the classroom and support from Elh staff throughout their stay. As students under 18 years of age are not yet considered adults by UK law, Elh strives to provide an even greater level of care to these students.
Registering a student who is under 18 years old:
  • To register a student who is under 18 years old student, please submit a fully registration form and parental consent form. The more detail you can provide on these forms, the better we can prepare for the student’s arrival and ensure their well-being.
  • By submitting the registration form, the student’s parent agrees to Elh Terms and Conditions and to the rules for students under 18 years old.
  • We cannot confirm the student’s place until the completed forms have been received.
Absence from class and unauthorised absence:
English Language House must receive written authorisation from their parent:
  • If a student under 18 years old plans to be absent from class or
  • Leaves the school during lesson time
Outside of school hours:
  • Students who are 16 or 17 years old can travel independently within the UK during the day, providing they return to their accommodation by 11.00 pm and notify the Elh accommodation offer and their homestay family in advance.
  • If a student under 18 years old wants to be absent overnight, take a holiday and/or travel outside of the UK, their parent must give written permission in advance.
Please note that English Language House does not take any responsibility for the supervision of students outside of lessons and Elh supervised activities.
Homestay accommodation for students under 18 years old
  • Elh can provide homestay accommodation for 16 and 17 year old from January 2021.
  • Elh will carefully select suitable homestay accommodation for students who are under 18 years old.
  • All homestay families have undergone thorough checks and have been personally inspected by a member of the Elh staff . We will always place students under 18 years old with families where any other students hosted by the family will also be under 18.  Students under the age of 18 are NOT permitted to stay in, or visit, homestay accommodation for adults ie students who are 18 years old or over.
  • Students aged 16 and 17 may be accommodated in host families for a maximum period of 11 months.
  • If a student under 18 years old is NOT staying in Elh homestay accommodation, the parents must provide Elh with the contact details of where the student is staying
Transfer service for under 18s:
  • Elh can arrange arrival and departure taxi transfers on request to ensure safe and comfortable travel between the student’s arrival point in the UK and the school or their accommodation in Milton Keynes, as requested.
  • Elh strongly recommends that the Under 18 Elh taxi transfer service is booked for the student. Arrival: The taxi driver will be DBS checked and the contact details will be sent to parents before the student's arrival in the UK. The taxi driver will meet the student at the arrivals gate of the airport, or at the arrivals hall of the Eurostar station. The taxi will take the student to their homestay accommodation or to Elh as arranged. Departure: the taxi driver will collect the student from their homestay accommodation or from Elh, as arranged, and will take them to the airport or Eurostar station. The student will need to check-in and go to the entrance of the departure gate.
  • If a student who is under 18 does not wish to use the Elh transfer service, Elh can not be held responsible for their safety.
Evening return time:
  • Students who are 16 or 17 must return to their Elh homestay accommodation by 11.00 pm every evening. This is in the interest of their safety and will also ensure they are fit to study the next morning.
Social activities, events and trips:
  • Students may be offered a selection of social activities, events and full or half day trips which they can join as part of their English programme. These may be free or paid events, activities or trips and students must confirm their participation in advance.
  • Students should bring enough money to cover any expenses eg entry fees to places of interest, train ticket, snacks etc, All social activities, events and trips will be supervised by Elh staff and under 18s must remain with the Elh staff member and under the Elh staff member's supervision at all times.
  • English Language House will not be held responsible for the actions or safety of students who do not remain under the supervision of Elh staff at all times.
Flights to the UK:
  • Some airlines do not allow under 18s to travel without an adult. As airline policies regarding young travellers change frequently you must check the current guidelines before booking any flights.
  • Please book flights in good time to ensure that under 18 year olds will not travel at unacceptable times
Spending money:
  • We suggest that students bring a cash card or a credit card to the UK. Visa and Mastercard are accepted in most shops and restaurants in the UK and you can get cash with these cards from most banks or ATMs. (see photo)
  • Many shops and restaurants will need you to use your card PIN number to buy something.
  • We strongly advise that students do not carry large amounts of cash
