This training day was delivered at ELH on Friday 13th October 2017. Staff who attended were from independent schools in the UK. The session was booked via the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISA) and was conducted by ELH senior trainers.

CELTA TRAINING FOR EAL STAFF

---

The CELTA course is an initial Cambridge Assessment English qualification in teaching English to international pupils. It is an internationally recognised qualification that is trusted by individuals, governments and schools all around the world.  
The course ELH offers for EAL staff in schools is an online CELTA course where the majority of the training will be delivered online via a VLP (virtual learning platform) and the face to face part of the course will be conducted at ELH during your school holiday periods. The next course for EAL staff is a 25 week CELTA from February 2018 to August 2018.  In addition to covering all elements of a standard CELTA course the course at ELH will also include additional sessions on: 

• teaching under 18s
• teaching EAL in schools
• developing an appropriate EAL school curiculum
• working with subject teachers to help them support multilingual EAL learners in their classes

The face to face element of the course will be for a total of 20 days to be delivered in 5 or 10 day blocks during school holiday periods as follows: 

• The first 5 days to be during the Easter break
• The second 5 days to be during the summer half term break 
• The last 10 days to be delivered during the Summer break

Accommodation can be sourced for trainees during the above periods for a small additional charge.

INTRODUCTION TO TEFL FOR EAL TEACHERS

• anyone in school interesting in learning about the principles and methodology used in teaching English as a foreign language
  

The training is conducted over 5 days and can be delivered either at ELH or onsite at the school. The sessions will cover:

• teaching L2 to multilingual groups of learners
  
• assessing learners language ability on entry
  
• developing suitable EAL courses to address needs of learners
  
• conducting appropriate ongoing assessment of L2 language development
• teaching curriculum subjects through the medium of L2  (challenges, problems, solutions)
  
• methodology and techniques
  
• resources and materials

LESSONS FOR SCHOOL CHILDREN

Does your school accept pupils from overseas? How good is their English?

• Do you have pupils with EAL needs in your school?
• Is there English language level quite low?
• Is it difficult for them to integrate in school and follow subject classes because their English is holding them back?
• Do you not have EAL staff with appropriate training ie a minimum qualification of CELTA or Trinity TESOL?
  

Then we can either

• send a teacher to your school to teach these children  
• provide short intensive English language classes during the holidays to help children improve their English Language Skills
