THE MIXED MODE CELTA


Mixed mode courses will require trainees to combine face2face and live online teaching and learning during the course. ​

ABOUT THE MIXED MODE CELTA COURSE AT ENGLISH LANGUAGE HOUSE
Our mixed mode CELTA will follow the Cambridge guidelines and each mixed mode course will be a mix of face-to-face and online teaching and learning.
Teaching practice
Your classroom teaching will:
  • include lessons face-to-face in a classroom and lessons in an online learning environment
  • be live with groups of learners
  • be observed by your trainer
Training
Your training sessions may be face-to-face, online, or a combination of both, with trainer support.

The course is suitable for candidates who
  • have a very good level of English,
  • are able to attend 50% of the course face2face at English Language House in Milton Keynes,
  • have good basic IT skills and
  • have use of a good computer and broadband services for the duration of the course.  
Trainees will be required to communicate both virtually and in person with others involved in the course and knowledge of how to use some of the following would be an advantage:
  • Gmail

  • ​Zoom​
  • Padlet
  • Moodle 
  • Microsoft teams​
  • Slack
  • Edmondo
  • Dropbox
If you are interested in applying for the course you should first
  • read the CELTA Terms and Conditions and the Terms and Conditions for Online Courses and then
  • complete the CELTA application form and
  • complete the pre interview task 

If your application is successful we will let you know and we will invite you to interview.
To confirm your attendance you must 
  • check you have already completed both the above forms and
  • make payment of the CELTA Application Fee

After your interview you will be sent an email with either a conditional or an unconditional offer.
  • A conditional offer will require you to meet certain criteria in order to join the course. 
  • An unconditional offer will allow you to join the first available course which you have selected in your application. ​​ 

You will need to pay the full course fees as indicated in your offer email in order to secure your place on the course.
Once payment has been made you will be given access to the CELTA pre course tasks and material which can help you to prepare for the course and familiarise yourself in greater detail with the course requirements and assessment criteria.
This may contain some or all of the following:
  • CELTA pre-course task
  • Reading list
  • Timetable
  • Observation tasks
  • IT skills tasks
  • VLP familiarisation task
Each CELTA course is 120 hours long and trainees should expect to spend extra time outside these hours in order to complete all aspects of the course.  ​

HOW MUCH WORK IS INVOLVED?
Each course requires a minimum of 120 hours attendance. During each course trainees will spend:
  • no less than 2 hours to complete each CELTA input Course Unit.
  • no less than 52 hours to attend all TP and SLP sessions with tutors.
  • no less than 8 hours to write the 4 assignments required.

TIMETABLE
The timetable for each course will be shared with you via googledrive and/or via the CELTAatElh website.
Some flexibility may be possible and tutors may make changes to accommodate students',  trainees' and tutors' availability and requirements as well as the requirements of the course as the course progresses. ​

​                   Course evaluation
Trainees will attend input sessions with tutors, teaching practice (TP) sessions with tutors and foreign students and will observe experienced teachers and each other as well as participate during post lesson self evaluation and feedback and supervised lesson preparation (SLP). 
​They will also need to complete 4 written assignments.

ASSIGNMENTS
You will need to complete 4 assignments. These are as follows:
Assignment 1   - Focus on the Learner 
Assignment 2   - Language Related Tasks 
Assignment 3   - Language Skills Related Tasks
Assignment 4   - Lessons from the Classroom 
The assignments  must complete in your own time and submitted by the due date. Your tutors will give guidance, mark the assignments and give feedback. It may be necessary to resubmit an assignment which does not meet the required standard, but you can only resubmit each assignment once. ​

TEACHING PRACTICE - FEEDBACK - SUPERVISED LESSON PREPARATION - OBSERVATIONS OF EXPERENCED TEACHERS
Teaching Practice (TP)
Each trainee must teach and be assessed by tutors for a total of 360 mins during the course. Lessons you teach will be organised in TP slots of 40 and/or 50 min sessions in your TP rota.
Lessons will be delivered to groups of foreign language students face2face at English Language House; but there will  be contingency plans in place for live online teaching should self- isolation be necessary due to Covid.
Tutors will assessed your lessons and you will be given feedback after each lesson you teach to help you develop.


TP will take place on set days and times and may last from 2 hours to 2.5 hours per day.
TP may be timetabled in the morning ie from 9:00 to 11:30 GMT, or in the afternoon ie from 14:00 to 16:30 GMT or in the evening ie from 18:00 to 20:30 GMT 

We will try to accommodate trainee's preferences whenever possible. If you think you may have a problem attending during one or more of the above times please let us know in advance. 

Feedback will take place after TP. 
During feedback trainees will need to reflect and evaluate the lessons they taught, give feedback on lessons taught by others and offer constructive criticism to peers who have taught lessons on a particular day. 
Feedback will usually last 60 mins and may take place either in 
the mornings ie between 9:00 and 13:00 GMT or in the afternoons ie between 14:00 and 18:00 GMT or in the evening ie between 18:00 and 22:00 GMT. 
We will try to accommodate trainee's preferences whenever possible. If you think you may have a problem attending during one or more of the above times please let us know.  ​​

Supervised Lesson Preparation (SLP)
During SLP tutors will help trainees prepare for their teaching practice. 

Observations:
Additionally trainees must observe 6 hours of lessons taught by qualified teachers, and must observe and give feedback on lessons taught by other trainees in their TP group.
