ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEVELS
We assess a student's language level on entry to ELH and they can join classes at one of 4 different levels:
LEVELS:
S = Starter level learner
The student has no English or very little English on entry to the course.
The student has no English or very little English on entry to the course.
A = Lower level learner
The student may have studied English before but may still have basic gaps in his/her knowledge. He/She may lack confidence and may still feel very uncomfortable when using simple English to communicate on a variety of everyday topics.
A lower level learner may choose to sit the A2 Cambridge Key (KET) exam.
The student may have studied English before but may still have basic gaps in his/her knowledge. He/She may lack confidence and may still feel very uncomfortable when using simple English to communicate on a variety of everyday topics.
A lower level learner may choose to sit the A2 Cambridge Key (KET) exam.
B = Higher level learner
The student has a good basic level of English and is more comfortable when communicating on a variety of everyday topics. He/She feels more confident to hold conversations with English speaking people but may lack the knowledge and skills to discuss more obscure topics, express more complex ideas and opinions clearly and communicate using more complex language.
A higher level learner may choose to sit the B1 Cambridge Preliminary (PET) or B2 Cambridge First (FCE) exam.
The student has a good basic level of English and is more comfortable when communicating on a variety of everyday topics. He/She feels more confident to hold conversations with English speaking people but may lack the knowledge and skills to discuss more obscure topics, express more complex ideas and opinions clearly and communicate using more complex language.
A higher level learner may choose to sit the B1 Cambridge Preliminary (PET) or B2 Cambridge First (FCE) exam.
C = Proficient level learner
The student can communicate well in a variety of situations, very rarely makes mistakes at a basic level, has a good range of grammar and vocabulary at a higher level and can express his/her ideas and opinions confidently and fluently in English. This student may need to further improve his/her accuracy and knowledge of more complex language as they progress toward native speaker level.
A proficient level learner may choose to sit the C1 Cambridge Advanced (CAE) or the C2 Cambridge Proficiency (CPE) exam.
The student can communicate well in a variety of situations, very rarely makes mistakes at a basic level, has a good range of grammar and vocabulary at a higher level and can express his/her ideas and opinions confidently and fluently in English. This student may need to further improve his/her accuracy and knowledge of more complex language as they progress toward native speaker level.
