FULL DAY ADD ON CPD TRAINING FOR CELTA TRAINEES
- Have you completed or are you about to complete the CELTA course?
- Do you plan teach in an English speaking school?
- Do you have EAL pupils in your school?
If you have answered "yes" to all the above questions then this add on course may be for you.
WHY A SCHOOL MAY WANT TO BOOK ONE OF THE ABOVE COURSES
Does your school teach pupils whose first language is not English? Do these pupils have needs such as EAL (English as an Additional Language), ESL (English as a Second Language), EFL (English as a Foreign Language), ESOL (English for Speakers of Othet Languages)? Then our specialised “Training for School Teachers” may provide the tailor made CPD training your teachers need to address your pupils’ needs.
The course will target the needs of any teachers who teach and monitor the progress of non native English speaking pupils in their schools through the medium of English. These teachers may be EAL/ESL/EFL/EFL teachers, subject teachers, teaching assistants, department heads etc. Our specialist trainers will assess the needs of the school, the teachers and the learners and will provide a specialised course to target these needs. The course can be delivered offsite to schools in the UK and abroad and trainers can be sent to your location to conduct the training. Alternatively teachers can attend face to face sessions at English Language House, Milton Keynes if they prefer. Some training can also be delivered synchronously and asynchronously via an online platform
Very often schools are required to teach both curriculum content, (ie science, geography, maths etc) as well as English language to pupils who are learning English as a second language.
This differs from simple English-medium education in that some pupils may not necessarily have the English language ability required to cope with the subject before beginning to study this in an English speaking school.
This requires teachers to adjust their methodology to ensure that their non-native English speaking pupils can understand the content of lessons taught in each class. Teachers cannot simply 'transmit' content and assume that all pupils will understand.
They would need to think of other means which would work such as group work, graded tasks, etc to increase a skill-based focus of learning. They may need to source and/or adapt educational material (textbooks, coursebooks, handouts, worksheet etc) that can also support this approach. Pupils would be required to learn language that is more clearly focused on, and related to, the subject matter that they are studying eg maths, physics, chemistry etc

The course will show teachers how to target the needs of non native English speaking pupils in their classrooms. It will help teachers learn how to:
- enable pupils to understand the content of their lessons
- reduce their personal TTT
- increase focus on skills
- adapt published materials
- develop material themselves
- help pupils learn contextualised language items
- help pupils learn language that is functionally necessary in the classroom
- and will cover any other areas requested by the school or group of teachers who book this course eg teaching for exams, teaching primary school children, assessing learner's English and/or subject knowledge and setting targets for achievement etc.
